WHO stops hiring smokers

Oh boy. I've been wondering if I'd find something that would get me back to this blog. Here it is: WHO stops hiring smokers.

In a nutshell, the World Health Organization (WHO) has stopped hiring smokers. Yep, if you smoke, you can't get a job. This includes the New York office.

Apparently since they're subject to international law, not the law of the country(ies) in which they operate.

This makes me wonder, what's next?

Let's see, diabetes is expensive to cover under health insurance. I know, let's not hire diabetics!

Americans are getting too fat. Let's not hire those who tip the scales at 150 or above! (Look out professional football linebackers!)

Women between 25-35 years old are in their prime child-bearing years, and their maternity leave will interrupt our business. Let's not hire young women!

Heck, road rage is becoming a big problem everywhere. No job for you if you drive!

This new practice is ridiculous. And NO I'm not a smoker!!

The Night That Wasn't

So my daughter went out of town for three days. The plan was, he would come over Thursday night and we'd spend some alone time together until he had to leave for work Saturday morning.

Thursday night was great. We spent some time making out and cuddling, with some light play involved. Fell asleep.

Friday. Well, Friday didn't work. I told him I didn't want to have sex until he was ready to be exclusive. Apparently that threw cold water on the plan because all of a sudden he had plans to take care of that evening.

Also, when I asked when we could go out again, he started listing how busy he was and said he'd call the day before he was free. Yeah.

Oh well. I happen to know I'm worth waiting for. One of these days someone else will think so too. Or not - I can be single. I don't want to be, but I can be.

C'est la vie.

Kicking Myself Now

You know there's just no in between with me. I seem to be incapable of following the normal progression of a relationship.

If I recall correctly, the normal progression goes something like this:

  1. Boy meets Girl

  2. Boy courts Girl

  3. Girl flirts with Boy

  4. Boy and Girl date

  5. More dating

  6. Still more dating, exclusive now

  7. Someone finally Says It

  8. The other returns the sentiment

  9. etc.

Not me. I gotta skip from #1 to #6 with no stops in between. Of course that's followed quickly by "Boy develops sudden urge for past flame".

I'm 36 years old. You'd have thought I'd learned this lesson by now. :-(

Newly-discovered Dealbreaker

Wow has it really been over a month since my last entry? Time sure flew, although while living it, it seemed to crawl.

I won tickets the "Two Hats and a Red Head" tour in Vancouver off the radio. Reba McEntire, Terri Clark, and Brad Paisley. The concert is 6/11. I posted a "who wants to go with me" email to a social club to which I belong, and got quite a few offers.

I met one man yesterday to see if we'd get along long enough to go to the concert. We met in the toy aisle at Wal-Mart and talked for TWO HOURS! It didn't seem like that long, except my knees/feet were killing me.

We had great rapport, and will probably end up going to the concert. I can see this becoming a great friendship, but not more than that. Which surprised me a little.

All along I've thought I had only one real "dealbreaker" when it came to a relationship with a man, but I found a second one last night.

Here's a list of things about this man that are usual dealbreakers with women:

  • 36, lives with mom
  • divorced twice
  • low-paying job

None of those are the dealbreakers though.

The dealbreaker is something else - not material in nature. An intangible. But a dealbreaker nonetheless.

Jacuzzi Saturday

Yay! What a totally terrific thing to do! Okay so I've only ever "hot tubbed" once before, and that was with a guy friend and we were in one of those romantic-themed hotels so it wasn't exactly the same kind of experience.

But I digress! This was so marvelously therapeutic! It's SO not like a bath! I have a friend with whom I was chatting from the hotel's wireless connection, and he said, and I quote: "I never have understood the concept behind bathing". Hello?!? This is so not like that. Comparing bathing to doing the Jacuzzi thing is like comparing a child-park roller coaster to The Demon at Great America. Ain't nothin' like the Real Thing Baby!

I spent several hours emptying my head of all my worries. I made list after list. Goals I want to accomplish, things I like about my job, things I hate about it, items I want to acquire ranked highest to lowest, etc. I even spent some time clearing my head about long-past relationships that tend to linger in my mind.

I set up a bunch of goals - ones that are attainable in the short term as well as some things to reach for long-distance. I set up another blog to track my progress on that - don't want to take up blog-space here for that.

So far so good - three days down, three days accomplishing their goals. What's that saying about taking 21 days to form a habit [Side Note: It is amazingly difficult to find a direct quote to this - it's from Maxwell Maltz, in this book that I've linked from Amazon]? I'm 1/7th of the way there!

Funk Remover

Well I broke down in tears at work today. Time to Do Something about this.

So, I'm taking a mini-vaca. I've booked a room in a nearby city. King suite w/Jacuzzi. I'm going to go all out, do some crying, do some laughing, and do a whole lotta "get it all outta my system" planning.

I'm going incommunicado. I've left a note in my apartment in case something dire happens to me, but other than that, nobody knows where I'll be. What a rare opportunity.

Look for some relevant postings next week from me, and wish me luck!

At loose ends

Okay so I'm sitting here at just before 11 pm on a Wednesday night, contemplating why I've felt in such a funky mood lately.

It all started with my Spring Break Odyssey, "do the right thing" trip to OK/MO/KS to visit my mom's siblings. My not-vacation. They're all old - over 65 - and I pretty much felt uncomfortable the whole trip. I'm not around old people a lot. And, I don't like thinking of my mother as old enough to die.

I'm not sure that the trip in itself was enough to send me spiraling the way I've been. But it sure could have been the catalyst. This funk isn't the melancholy, "poor lonely me" kinda thing. It's more like this restlessness; a sense of being jarred out of my complacency with The Way Things Are.

My job, for one. I got a 5% raise in November last year to be lead worker of the help desk team. I had these grand plans . . . that have fizzled to nearly nothing. The rotated people were far below "up to snuff", plus the one person who does know what she's doing was out of the office for 60% of the time until recently. Yay for the 5%, but frustrating to be stymied.

Then, I normally do this pretty nifty little spreadsheet tool to help our customers with a mathematical computation that they're either unable or unwilling to learn. It's an "extra", not part of our "book of business", and far above the expectations of those in my salary range. I did it because I like working with the formulas, and to be honest I enjoyed the ego strokes when people raved about it. But, this year with substandard help and only 40% of the one position, I simply didn't have time to do this. And I got absolutely slammed by our customers for not doing it. Not politely, not "oh but we liked it so much", but "How dare you give us a tool that we come to depend on then take it away and expect us to do it ourselves?" My boss supported me not doing it, because taking the time to make that spreadsheet simply wasn't feasible IF we wanted to continue our other customer service commitments. It got to the point where I said it was outside of my salary class and I wasn't going to do it. So then my boss' boss tells my boss to authorize overtime for me to get it done, and long story short I cave and do it. Know what? I HATE IT!! Yes, it's good work. Yes, it's something our customers clamor to get. But I am so disgusted with all the drama around it that I never want to touch it again. I told my boss to start outlining the business rules for one of the programmers to do a VB app for it because I wasn't going to do it next year. And yes, I could do the VB app, too, but ain't no way I'm going to do that work at the salary I'm making.

Okay another aspect of why I feel unsettled is feeling frustrated that I'm stuck. I don't have the schooling necessary for a similar-paying job in the private industry, and the open positions with the state are all lower paid. Plus, I'm bored to tears with what I'm doing at work now and I haven't had any motivation lately to change those circumstances. I spend most of each day since returning from my not-vacation doing busy work to make me look productive, while still not "cheating" my employer by doing personal stuff on work time.

I want to move. But - I'm on track for paying off everything I own and coming up with a down payment on a house. If I move, that will push that particular goal back by at least a year, maybe more. Too, I'm not convinced that I want to buy a house here, although at first that is indeed what I wanted. And I don't know where I want to move. Part of me wants to move back to my hometown, knowing I have personal contacts and wouldn't have to start from scratch again, plus I'd get to see my daughter more often. Part of me wants to open up a map and throw a dart, then move wherever that lands. And still another part of me yearns to be near extended family in the midwest.

I need new work challenges. Real challenges, not ones manufactured by TPTB to impress elected officials with inflated accomplishments. I need clear direction/focus in what I want to do with my life. I need to go through all the stuff in my apartment, in my finances, and in my life and purge/refine/acquire as necessary.

I need a helper. A paid professional maybe, or a no-nonsense, no-agenda friend who can dig in with me to help me out and help me up out of this quagmire. Someone not afraid to get his/her hands dirty. I have tried doing this alone, but it isn't working. I need a clear starting point, and "just do it" isn't working. Where do I find such help?
